Like all the good things in life, this little country pub in Noordhoek is part of a much greater story. In fact under this thatch roof, while you fill your belly with our fine food and quality drink and regale each other your own stories, the latest chapter of my story is being written around us. Every bite, every sip is part of the narrative. It's a funny old thing, life, and I'm quite a funny looking old man. My name is Ronald Mustafa Ponsenby McGraff, but you can just call me Toad. I came to own this pub as a result of a string of exciting, interesting and painful experiences. I was born in Zimbabwe, my father was a Railway Engineer responsible for the railway line that stretches from Cape Town to Kampala in Uganda and my mother swears she was a Moroccan princess. I was a stubborn and ambitious young man, so I left school aged 17 to seek my fortune. My travels took me within a whisker of being shot by the Johannesburg Chief of Police, before I made a lucky break and ended up working as a bellhop on the Union Castle Line between Plymouth and Cape Town. On this boat I happened to save a dear old high society lady from her wicked step son, and so began a long and lucrative business association. Along the way I have had my fair share of adventure: arrested by the Chinese in Tibet, kidnapped by terrorists in Somalia, tortured in Colombia and back home in South Africa. I've tracked lion in the Serengeti and ridden elephants in the Chobe. I've rubbed marula bark on a million mosquito bites. I was there for Prince Charles and Lady Di's marriage, and was also a guest of honour at President Mandela's inauguration. And it hasn't all been hard work and tough times. Over the years I've sunned myself on luxury yachts in the Med and been massaged by the bored wives of several Sultans and Sheikhs. After all this I find myself content in this little country pub in Noordhoek I now call home. Please enjoy me and my friends with music and laughter, good food and good times and most importantly continue to recount the legendary stories we all need to hear many years from now. |
